Welcome to the START_it_up website!

 

START_it_up is a project within the 5th call of the Alpine Space Program dedicated to the development of common “state-of-the-art” or “best-practice” in the field of Natural Hazard Risk Management (NHRM) and Risk Governance (RG). The primary project task is to make specific standards and norms available and accessible for the expert community of engineering and policy. The project aims at the capitalisation of the technological knowledge pool, which was created within various ETC-funded projects (as well as other research and development initiatives), by enhancing it into generally (transnationally) acknowledged rules for technology and policy. This unification process becomes operational by gathering and completing the available recommendations, pre-standards and good practice, assembling the knowledge in a Web 2.0 database, performing a rating process by an Expert Panel, testing the usability for engineering practice and policy and finally implementing it as an approved norm or standard. The project shall pave the path for a transnationally institutionalised standardisation process and the establishment of a risk governance policy forum. The added value of a common “state-of-the-art” will be an increase in quality and reliability in planning of safety concepts, design of protection works and expert decision making as well as the improvement of chances for specialised providers of protection systems on the market. In addition strategic recommendations for the next funding period of the Alpine Space program 2014+ related to the project topics will be generated.
